Sound or naada is fascinating. Mediators have reported hearing sounds while plumbing the depths of silence. I have always been fascinated with sound. My first brush with recording was when my brother, who was in the merchant navy, brought home a tape recorder. I was fascinated by how this device could capture my voice and play it back to me tirelessly, faultlessly every time I hit the play button. I then tried to record some music playing on the radio by using a portable microphone that was bundled with the device, padding it with cushions behind the microphone, by instinct. I was probably six or seven years old. The good man that he was, he did not complain about ruining his pre-recorded tapes (it was a Simon and Garfunkel tape – Bridge over troubled water)!
I am still fascinated with sound and the sheer ability to be able to capture it on a medium and play it back still fascinates me although we have come a long way. My dream of setting up a studio is slowly falling in place.
I wish people share my fascinations for sound. Video is all fine; televisions are great but give me a radio any day. Video is too definitive! Leaves little room for imagination. Book lovers will hopefully agree with me here! Movies that are based on successful novels somehow do not have the same ooomph the prose did.
